DermaGear Scalp Rinse vs Green Soap

Green soap tincture antimicrobial and is an excellent disinfectant. Additionally, Green soap tincture contains Lavandula latifolia (Lavendar Extract), typically an essential oil, extracted through the hydrodistillation process. Lavendar Extract, does have many properties that are beneficial to the skin when applied topically only.

Green Soap tincture is widely used in tattoo, piercing, and micropigmentation procedures. Tattoo artists are often quoted as saying green soap tincture is used a skin preparation prior to surgery and as a topical wash. While that may have been the case in 1940-1965 it is not the case today. Chlorhexidine gluconate (CHG) and or iodine compounds,  per Association of Surgical Technologies (AST) are specified in standard practices. Tattoo artists, also claim that green soap tincture is soothing to the skin. However, given the composition of green soap tincture, that claim is questionable:

POTASSIUM HYDROXIDE POTASSIUM HYDROXIDE 5.961 g  in 100 mL
 ALCOHOL ALCOHOL 24.93 g in 100 mL
 Inactive Ingredients
 LAVENDER EXTRACT
 GLYCERIN
 WATER

To qualify as a tincture, the extract should have an ethanol percentage of at least 25–60% (50–120 US proof). In herbal medicine, alcoholic tinctures are made with various ethanol concentrations, 25% being the most common.

VR1 receptors proteins in the skin signal the brain when exposed to heath resulting in pain sensation. Alcohol, ethanol, isopropanol, etc. (alcohols) lowers the temperature threshold needed to trigger VR1 receptors. Researchers believe that pain and irritation experienced from washing a wound with alcohols result from:

  1. VR1 receptors temperature activation lowered by alcohols.
  2. Activation of VR1 receptors from body heat due to the lower temperature activation.

Ethanol elicits and potentiates nociceptor responses via the vanilloid receptor-1

While LAVENDER EXTRACT has been shown to be beneficial in the healing process and significantly adds to the antimicrobial properties of green soap tincture it typically found at low concentrations of green soap due to the high price of lavender extracts.

DermaGear™ products do not contain ethanol, isopropyl alcohol or solvents that signal VR1 receptors. In contrast, DermaGear™ Scalp Rinse contains powerful antioxidants and bacteria licensing compounds that significantly reduce swelling and irritation.
